N.T. Bible Study

This Spring we’ve studied through some Bible books together, but I had no specific plan of where to go next. I spent some time in prayer and began to think through our direction. I wanted something that could be worked on independently by all, but still discussed daily together when we had time. I had already decided I wanted to do a “90 day” reading plan over the summer, so decided that this would be good for our older children too. I also wanted to encourage them to keep studying, not just reading (as much as they are able). Last week I made my plan, and we’ve started, our summer Bible study.

I chose a three month chronological reading of the New Testament. (This would work out to 1 semester of “school days”, if you choose to do it that way.) We are following the Biblical Principles method of study detailed in R Road to Biblical Wisdom. This is simplified for Bible Study in our Spiritual Journey journal pages.

Perhaps you’d like to join us (do this same study on your own.)

You can find the reading plan we are using at Bible Study Tools. You can also get a free iphone/ipad app for it.

You can get the Spiritual Journey pages to customize your your notebooks for this study, or use a Composition Notebook. The Spiritual Journey pages are colorful pages with nature photos as backgrounds that you copy and put in a half-sized (8.5″ x 5.5″) 3 ring binder.  A composition notebook is a sewn, handy sized notebook with 100 sheets, perfect size for a 3 month study. See our simple instructions below. If you’d like more in-depth information on how to study anything by Biblical principles get R Road to Biblical Wisdom.

Study instructions:

We read and study that we might know our God better and love Him even more as we see more clearly through His Word, Who He truly is. Pray that your heart will open open to receive God’s Word, to know Him better, and that the Holy Spirit will teach you, and give you grace to apply what you learn.

Read the day’s passages and check them off on the reading plan.

Journal your study under the following headings (1 page – front and back – per day.)

  • Read: Note the references of the passages you read.
  • Record/Rewrite: Write a very short summary or outline answering “Who, What, When, Where, Why and How” about the reading.
  • Reflect: What does it mean? What is its context? What does it show me about God, Jesus, man, sin, grace, the gospel, the law, cause and effect? Use cross references, concordance, Bible maps, commentary, or other study tools as needed. If you have further questions about the passage that aren’t answered in your study today, write them down.
  • Relate: How does this apply to me? What am I to think and do?
  • Recite: Copy a verse/verses to meditate on throughout the day.

Pray to close out your time of study. Ask God to lead you to greater understanding and answers to your questions, and grace to walk out what you’ve learned; that you would not only love Him more but also show forth His love to others.

Back 2 the Books

OK, I really hope you didn’t take a vacation from books, but in this sense I mean the bookwork type (“table time”) lessons that you do with your children. Although we “school” (or more precisely “learn”) year round, many follow the public school calendar in their homes, or at least take the summer months off and restart in the fall. (Although I notice that the ps keeps starting earlier and earlier every year. The summer “off” used to mean Memorial Day through Labor Day. And I truly believe those kids need let out of their “prison” walls for those 3 months. — Their words.) But enough rabbit trails–maybe. Point is many of you are heading back to the books (not back to school.) And —

Ebooks in Home Ed

Ebooks are rapidly infiltrating home education. This type of resource that was unknown just a few short years ago, is experiencing a huge growth spurt. Some home educators are thrilled with this new technology (especially when they come for FREE.) Some home educators are very leary of it, loving their paper books and not wanting them to be replaced. And many home educators (and the rest of society) are clueless. They aren’t really sure what exactly an ebook is, how to use them, or where to find them.

Putting the ‘E’ in Home E-ducation~Freedom & Simplicity™ Guide to Using Ebooks, the newest Freedom & Simplicity™ guide from Me & My House ministries, will walk you through the answers to those questions and many more.

… Lisa, have you looked at my computer?! I have e-books in so many places that I really need that free software you tell us about and I’ll be downloading it just as soon as I finish this review.

Like so many homeschool moms, I love to research and discovered many gems through the years that I planned to incorporate into our homeschooling. I’m still finding them, although our youngest is a rising junior in college. Sigh.

But YOU don’t have to do that. Lisa is offering her e-book for a limited time at a low introductory price. If you would like to do better at managing and organizing e-books more effectively so they can be incorporated into your homeschooling (and as Lisa pointed out, there are so many free classics!), you might just want to take a look. …

New Vocabulary Study resource

Freedom & Simplicity™ Study of Vocabulary & English Roots

Hot off the press!

The study of Etymology will enable you to communicate more clearly, as you learn more words you will be able to use more precise words correctly. What is etymology? Awe, if you know you can communicate more clearly. Etymology is made of 2 Greek parts that together mean “the study of the true sense of words”. Understanding the vocabulary we use.

Words have meanings. And knowing the meanings of a wide variety of words and how to use them properly helps us communicate more precisely to others so they can understand us better. It also is a great help in learning more new words. Although having a large vocabulary (and understanding of those words) can get you great scores on the SAT (and also lead to self-aggrandizing pride – if your only purpose is to show off what you know), the primary purpose for building your vocabulary is to avoid misunderstanding.

If you plan to go to college, a study of English Vocabulary is important. If you plan to converse with others effectively (and I hope you do) it is vital.

This Freedom & Simplicity™ resource provides the tools you need to effectively study Vocabulary, so you can effectively use it in communication. Follow the R Road process to reason through several types of word studies, and Journal these studies on the provided notebooking forms. Rather than a full list of words to study, this course gives you the tools to study any word! These tools include: Foundational study – to put Vocabulary learning in its proper whole-to-parts context, a variety of Journaling forms with instructions, suggested resources – including Webster’s 1828 Dictionary, and an example of course requirements, grading and credits for high school students.
