It’s About Time ~ Freedom & Simplicity™ Timelines

 

HisStory is about Time. It’s about God working throughout time, to reveal His plan. Time shapes each event on earth into what it is. Being able to place events, ideas and lives into their correct time brings much understanding to His (God’s) Story. A timeline is a tool that helps us place those happenings.

In addition to great reasons for utilizing a timeline in your studies, there are many types of timelines, and ways you can design a timeline. In this Guidebook, I share both with you. But most of all I share with you how we have come to Freedom & Simplicity™ with Timelines. There are so many choices out there (and I show you several.) But what can be done in Simplicity, and what is going to bring the Freedom of understanding into our studies? That is the main question we answer in this Freedom & Simplicity™ Learning Guide. The Fallacy Detective

What is a fallacy? A fallacy is an error in logic – a place where someone has made a mistake in his thinking.

These are fallacies:

“A cloud is 90% water. A watermelon is 90% water. Therefore, since a plane can fly through a cloud, a plane can fly through a watermelon.”

The Heavens Declare

I haven’t gotten to review this book yet, but have enjoyed getting to know the author through publishing lists we’re on together and Facebook. Being Biblically based (and published by Apologia) and CM methods it should be a good fit for those using L.E.D.  Exploring Creation with Astronomy
AND the NEW – Astronomy Junior Notebooking Journal

 

A journey through space that you’ll never forget. Your child will learn more about space than other children their age, and will be able to hold their own in conversations with knowledgeable adults.

One of my favorite things about this book is the conversational style in which it is written. It reads more like a mutual discussion about astronomy, rather than a science textbook. Very in-depth information is conveyed, but with words and expressions to which a child can relate. This doesn’t mean it is dumbed down, for the course itself has enough information to qualify for a high school astronomy course.

Another thing I love about Exploring Creation with Astronomy is that each child essentially makes his own astronomy book utilizing notebooking activities and assignments. These assignments are designed to replace workbooks, which do not draw from the child’s heart and mind what was learned. Creating a notebook page truly draws the most out of the child. There is a saying, “Tell me, and I’ll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I’ll understand.” Notebooking is the act of involving the child in his learning.

Copywork pertaining to our current studies is our general method of practicing handwriting, but sometimes extra, focused practice is needed for some children. These Practice Pages fill that need. Plenty of practice, (along with reminders to observe the Rudiments,) in 2 sizes of manuscript and 1 of cursive, for the alphabet and sentences using every letter of the alphabet. Help for Child Training

The responsibility to train the little ones God has entrusted into our care is a weighty one. Doing it for His glory, with Grace & Truth, is humanly impossible. But thankfully He is with us to help us, and He’s given us wisdom in His Word for us to follow. It seems much of that parenting wisdom held by previous generations has been lost. Looking for great adventurous, historical reading?

It is really hard for me to choose a favorite Henty to place here. So many are so good, and they are a Recommended Resource for Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™. (In our Resources & Recommendations Online Catalog on our HisStory: Historical Fiction Page.)  

I could put the one about the American Revolution, but since Henty was British, his tale is from the other side. So I’ll list the one that Jim has on sale this month, so if you don’t win, you can go buy a copy of the downloadable version at a great price, on Jim’s website!  St. Bartholomew’s Eve

I trust you all had a wonderful Independence Day celebration! It was a great day celebrating the 235th birthday of a great nation! Conversely, 439 years ago, one of the signal events in the Reformation was played out in Paris – The St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre.

Catholics and Protestants had been at serious odds since Luther’s nailing of his 95 theses protesting the sale of indulgences to the church door at Wittenburg on October 31st, 1517.  The differences between the two belief systems had spilled over into actual fighting and wars between monarchs which held to the different belief systems.  Often the full military force of the government was brought down on a country’s citizens who believed differently than the king!  Such was the case in France.

On August 24, 1572, more than two thousand French Huguenots (Protestants) – men, women, and children – were massacred for their faith.In St. Bartholomew’s Eve, Henty recounts the adventures of Phillip Fletcher, son of an English father and a French mother, who journeys to France to take part in the Huguenots’ struggle for religious freedom. He and his band of soldiers see much combat, and Phillip’s skill as a swordsman and marksman is required innumerable times before he returns as a hero to England.

Henty vividly depicts Admiral Coligny’s unflinching bravery, Queen Elizabeth’s vacillating foreign policy, Catherine de Medici’s vindictive scheming, and the Queen of Navarre’s inner strength.

Setting: AD 1570-72, France, the Roman Catholic / Calvinist Protestant religious wars
