Looking for great adventurous, historical reading?

It is really hard for me to choose a favorite Henty to place here. So many are so good, and they are a Recommended Resource for Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™. (In our Resources & Recommendations Online Catalog on our HisStory: Historical Fiction Page.)

I could put the one about the American Revolution, but since Henty was British, his tale is from the other side. So I’ll list the one that Jim has on sale this month, so if you don’t win, you can go buy a copy of the downloadable version at a great price, on Jim’s website! But, even better, if you DO win, and don’t want this one, you can choose ANY of the Henty titles available from Jim. ~ Me

 St. Bartholomew’s Eve

I trust you all had a wonderful Independence Day celebration! It was a great day celebrating the 235th birthday of a great nation! Conversely, 439 years ago, one of the signal events in the Reformation was played out in Paris – The St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre.

Catholics and Protestants had been at serious odds since Luther’s nailing of his 95 theses protesting the sale of indulgences to the church door at Wittenburg on October 31st, 1517.  The differences between the two belief systems had spilled over into actual fighting and wars between monarchs which held to the different belief systems.  Often the full military force of the government was brought down on a country’s citizens who believed differently than the king!  Such was the case in France.

On August 24, 1572, more than two thousand French Huguenots (Protestants) – men, women, and children – were massacred for their faith. In St. Bartholomew’s Eve, Henty recounts the adventures of Phillip Fletcher, son of an English father and a French mother, who journeys to France to take part in the Huguenots’ struggle for religious freedom. He and his band of soldiers see much combat, and Phillip’s skill as a swordsman and marksman is required innumerable times before he returns as a hero to England.

Henty vividly depicts Admiral Coligny’s unflinching bravery, Queen Elizabeth’s vacillating foreign policy, Catherine de Medici’s vindictive scheming, and the Queen of Navarre’s inner strength.

Setting: AD 1570-72, France, the Roman Catholic / Calvinist Protestant religious wars

I’d like to hear the With Lee in Virginia: A Tale of the American Civil War because it is one of my mother’s favorite topics. I have not studied this topic much, and it would be great to be able to discuss this with my mom.

  10. Heather says:

I posted on fb about it… but I see I misread where to post. So, here it is…
    1) I’ve heard so much about Henty and I’d really appreciate being able to listen to one of the CD’s! I am too unfamiliar with the material to choose… so I’d like to go with your recommendation of “St. Bartholomew’s Eve.” It’ll help me to learn more about this period of history. 🙂

2)I think that’s what I did with the above comment…

3)Already done… just need to “approve” it.

    4)Done.

  26. Thanks to all who commented!

    And the winner is —

    Jennifer B.
    Congratulations! I’ll be emailing you.

Our family seemed to take a long time to get into Henty books. (Could have something to do with having 5 older girls.) 🙂 But even for me, they were just too detailed in getting into the story.(They seem to appeal to boys better.) 🙂

Jim’s audios got me going. Listening got me through the beginning and into being hooked into the stories. That is how I introduced our boys (and 1 younger daughter) to Henty’s – With Lee in Virginia, Jim’s audio. I’ve been adding the audios to our book collection ever since.

I really like Jim’s audios best, as his are unabridged (the full book!)
See Henty’s here in our catalog. There is also a pdf file there to download that gives a list of the titles and when they are about.

  27. Hi Lori,

Yes there are a lot of them about various things in the 1700’s. Download the pdf list of books with their dates on our Henty catalog page.
