In an Expo this HUGE (ULTIMATE) if I didn’t have some system of organization it would become way too overwhelming and I’d miss out on a LOT that is available. Read below to see how I’m doing it. And if you aren’t registered for the Expo yet, click here or the banner to get your ticket.

Yesterday I was only able to "attend" one live session. Cris and Katherine Loop spoke on Socialization. The topic garnered a lot of interest and the attenders were blessed.

On the Members Site I made it through the "I’s". It’s helping that I know many of the vendors already, so I don’t have to spend a lot of time at their sites learning about them. But I did run into a few that I was unfamiliar with. After skimming through them, I bookmarked and downloaded the information of the ones I am interested in, to check them out further during a less hectic week.

I also took an hour away by myself for some quiet time to think through my topic I’ll be speaking on Fri. afternoon. Though the outline is completed, I still need to think through the presentation. I will need a bit more of that quiet time today and/or tomorrow. So that means I will miss more sessions, during the bit of "free" time I have.

A friend and I also took the afternoon to go visit our local used book store. (Which is why I didn’t make it to any other sessions.) But, as usual, even though "I really didn’t find anything", I walked out $50 poorer in cash and richer in great classic books.

All my Mommy Grab Bag and other downloads are organized, and I thought I’d share with you what I did. It may be helpful for you too. I created a folder called UHSE. Inside that folder I created folders for each company that I downloaded from, and saved all their resources in that folder. (Some only have one, but this way I know where it is from. The titles don’t always tell.) By organizing them in this way nothing will get lost in the glut of other educational resources I already have on my computer, and I will go through the UHSE folder as time allows.

I download pretty much everything, then read through them (when I get a chance) and decide if they’ll be helpful to us or not. If I think so, I move them to my regular education folders, based on area of study (history, science, art, etc.) I have a special folder in each of those called "samples", for those things that aren’t really usable as they are, but I am possibly interested in ordering. Then when I’m planning a study I look through those folders and pick what we can use for that study, and what I’m going to order (if anything).

I bookmark any site I want to get back to to learn more about the company and their products – in my regular bookmarks, set up by area of study. I also set up a bookmark folder for UHSE which has my links to the Vendors, Seminars, and Mommy Grab Bag, and my Affiliate account. Also in that folder I have bookmarked the "Specials" page of any of the special offers I may want to take advantage of, so I don’t forget them.

The other organizing you’ll want to do is to take the schedule Cindy sent us (of the speakers) and print it out. (I’m in her time zone. But if you aren’t, mark YOUR times for each session.) Mark the sessions you REALLY want to attend. Circle them in red or something.

Even better put the sessions on your computer/Palm – handheld calendar and set alarms for each session you don’t want to miss. You can put all the sessions on your calendar, or just those that you REALLY want to attend. If you just put the ones that are high priority on your calendar, with alarms, still keep the sheet with all sessions, just in case you get a lull in your day and you think, "I could listen now. I wonder what they’re talking about."

For sessions that I’m really too busy to "attend", but I’m not doing something that requires full concentration (i.e. I’m not teaching the children, and they are not trying to work on book work) I’ll turn the session on. Even though I’m not sitting right there, I catch bits and snippets here and there as I go about my other responsibilities. This helps me know which sessions I really want to listen to when the audios become available. Remember to also sign up for the RSS feed so all sessions will come into your podcasts on iTunes. Then they will all be there waiting for you and you won’t miss any.

This week I will be ‘Live Blogging’ the Ultimate Homeschool Expo. I really don’t know how many live speaking sessions I’ll get to. But it will be a busy week. If you don’t have your ticket yet, get it now – $40! for a full week of live sessions, plenty of vendors booths with a ton of Free Gifts. PLUS you can listen and browse, download and buy at YOUR convenience – long after the Expo is over.

This Expo is as large as any live homeschool conference I’ve attended – perhaps by now larger than the largest I’ve attended. We went into the Expo with over 3000 Members. As of last night, I heard the total was somewhere between 3500-4000.

I will miss the face to face contact with the attenders, that I SO LOVE when presenting at a LIVE convention. And it sure won’t be "busy" in the same sense as it is when working a LIVE convention. But those don’t last a whole week either! I will mainly be here taking care of my family, and popping into the Expo whenever I have a chance. And (hopefully) still filling plenty of orders for Me and My House exclusive resources. (But if you’re a Member of the Expo, use the link on my Vendor’s page, not this one, to get a special deal. If I haven’t convinced you to join the Expo, you can still take advantage of our Anniversary Tax Sale.)

My booth stands there without me to tailor my presentation to the individuals that visit it. The closest to personal contact you’re going to get is email and comments here on my L.E.D. musings. But I also will be completely available to my family, and have more opportunity (maybe) to attend other sessions and not just get the recordings, (as I have to at Live conventions.) And I do have a LIVE Seminar coming up in June, where I’ll get to present Lifestyle Education thorugh Discipleship™ to attenders face to face. (Can you join us?)

Yesterday the UHSE kicked off without me in the morning. Somehow I wasn’t getting the Member’s emails and so was a bit behind at getting info. So the children and I worshipped and studied. And then I got into the very tail end of JoJo Tabares, speaking on Communication. I missed Rhea Perry while we were working here. (Did she make it, or did Cindy have to jump in?) I got back toward the end of Felice Gerwitz, speaking on Science. And was able to make it for Cindy Carrier, in the evening, speaking on "You’re NOT Superwoman!"

The Conference room crashed so we had to move over to TalkShoe. I actually like TalkShoe. The audio seems better – and mainly I can use my Mac for it, and don’t have to use a headset. But the Chat isn’t as easy to follow.

The Conference room came back up later, so several were chatting in Conference and listening in TalkShoe. That was — different. Especially since I had them going on 2 different computers, since Conference doesn’t work on my Mac. The "chatting" during sessions still bugs me (even though I participate). It’s just weird – OK? And it going on in TWO chat rooms, during the speaker was just too much. I know, I’ve got to get over it. I’m used to LIVE conferences, where nobody talks and just listens intently. — especially when I’M the speaker!! Listen up ladies!! My kids get in big trouble for chatting when I’m talking to them.

On the Members Site, I got through the Mommy Grab Bag – and downloaded tons of stuff – yesterday. (Still have to go through and organize it, and check for doubles from before. Since I know many of these businesses, I may already have some of them. :-)

In the Vendors Hall – I made it through the "A’s". I figure if I don’t do it in order I’ll never hit them all.

I also set up the RSS feed, so all the speaking sessions will download straight to my iTunes, and I don’t have to worry about missing a session.

To cap it off, I WON "The Growing Homeschool" book that Cindy Carrier gave away!! Awesome way to end the day.

Won’t you join us for the Ultimate Homeschool Expo?

Things have changed a LOT since we began home educating in 1987. There were basically a small handful of "biggie" Christian curriculum suppliers who had just recently began allowing home educators to purchase their resources, if they requested to do so on school letterhead. Non-traditional (read that, non- textbook/workbook) type resources were just beginning to break forth on the scene, and a SMALL market was just beginning to develop specifically for home educators. Our challenge was finding any resources to match our philosophy of education.

Today you have a different challenge. Businesses and ministries targeted to home educators have EXPLODED. Your challenge today is to wade through the thousands of choices available to you. But, aside from trial and error, how are you really going to know which ones really line up with what you are looking for?

Another thing began to grow quickly in the home education community, when we were early on our journey, the homeschool convention. There you could listen to encouragement, training, and the hearts of those that were further on the journey and those producing the resources. You could also see and touch, look through and ask questions of those who were selling the resources – and many times those who had written them.

Me and My House was there. We began presenting non-traditional resources we’d found, at home education conventions in the early 90′s. Here in the midwest, things were still in the "biggie" traditional resources mode, and we wanted to bring the newer non-traditional resources in for people to get aquainted with. As the resource business grew, so did the conventions.

And then another thing changed the face of home education, the boom of the internet. Now there were literally thousands of resources available to home educators without even walking out their doors. This changed the face of Me and My House also. It was no longer feasible for us to continue presenting at the conventions, and carrying inventory in a small rural area was not cost effective. We too turned to the internet for the bulk of our "face" to the world.

Although the internet has made getting home educating resources more convenient in many ways. It sure hasn’t solved that problem of making the right choice amongst the plethora of resources there are out there.

This week you have a unique opportunity to hear the heart of MANY home education resource producers. You have the opportunity to listen to encouragement and training. You have the opportunity to see samples of many resources, recieve articles, catalogs, and audio workshops from many companies. You have the opportunity to ask questions of many "faces" in the home education community. This week you have the opportunity to do this without leaving your home – whatever time of night or day, or whatever day this week or in the future, is convenient for YOU.

This week – and on indefinately – you have the opportunity to join the Ultimate Homeschool Expo, a HUGE online homeschool convention. Registration for the UHSE costs no more than registration for a live convention, and there are no added costs for travel, motels, meals, child care and such. AND you will receive FAR MORE than you’d get at a live convention.

You get to hear ALL the speakers and vendors, not just choose which ones you can listen to live, because you get FREE recordings of EVERY SESSION! – that you can download at YOUR convenience. You don’t get that at live conventions! You also can spend as much time at each vendor’s booth as you choose. No rush to try to get it all in, because even after the Expo is over, it really isn’t OVER! You can revisit the vendor’s booths and download all their FREE gifts and samples and audios and articles, and all the sessions ANY TIME!

It starts RIGHT NOW – so go get your ticket – $40.

I’m not having a boatload of fun this weekend. The ballgames were cold and windy, and Sat. night, very WET. AND very little time to spend with our daughter and her husband, and our grandgirls. But I’m home now – dry and warm – and finishing my preparations for my Seminar Session at the Ultimate Homeschool Expo, the HUGE online homeschool convention that starts tomorrow morning.

As I promised yesterday, I’m sharing another of Cindy Rushton’s articles with you today. Cindy is the hostess for the Ultimate Homeschool Expo, She’s given me permission to share these articles with you. Today’s article will give you ideas for a Nature Notebook. All these ideas will work well with Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™.

So read today and tomorrow and be ready to listen, whenever you’re able beginning tomorrow.

Don’t forget to tune in on Friday, May 2 at 3 p.m. CT to listen to Me speak on Finding Freedom & Simplicity™ while Seeking Biblical Excellence (Wisdom).

And, of course, you’ll need to get your ticket to the Expo first. Purchase it here.

It is Spring! Why Not Begin a Science Notebook?
by Cindy Rushton

Today being inside just tortures me! It is STUNNING outside! Even the little birds are begging us to go outside.

Are you like me, dying from "cabin fever" and ready for spring? This is the perfect time to begin Nature Notebooks! Not only will you have an abundance of treasures awaiting your exploration, but these are perfect days to try something fresh. Ready? Let me help…

Chances are you already have many things that could be included in a Science Notebook around your home. Look for those "goodies" that do not have their own special place and add them to your Science Notebooks. This is the perfect opportunity to develop "a place" for those "goodies" while developing a nice product for displaying all the growing knowledge of nature all while your children are keeping special memorabilia! One of the things that I like about using supplies intended for scrapbooking is that there are so many products that enable us to keep bulky materials safely inside of our notebooks. Not to mention, scrapbooking makes EVERY notebook so much cuter! J And…to imagine that we call this "school!"

Want some ideas of things to include in your notebooks???

· Sketches…Don’t forget to include date, time, place, Latin name, and common name. Oh! Don’t forget to document where you found it.

· Snapshots…Don’t forget to journal about your snapshot!

· Pressed flowers, leaves, feathers, butterflies, etc.

· Glossary of terms studied…

· Artwork… (Nature art, original drawings, coloring pages…)

· Diagrams…

· Poetry…

· Information about discoveries…

· Lists of new findings…

· Handouts from trips…

· Narrations from trips, outings, hikes, nature walks, books read about nature or scientists/naturalists…

· Timeline…Mark your excursions, inventions, famous men and women, so on!

· Instruction Sheets on "How to Care for…" or "How to Collect…" etc.

· Booklets…

· Project data…

· Bible verses…

· Journal entries…

· Details from outings…

· Favorite quotes about nature…

· Reading list…

· Research…

· Reports…

· Essays…

· Science experiment logs…

· Notes from any Science study…

You can add a lot of life to your Science Notebooks with special supplies you find along the way! I have found that the little touches have made our notebooks so much more fun and in the process hooked my children.

Encourage your children to use die-cuts, frames, stencils, shapes, and edgings galore to make their notebooks fun and beautiful! My children now beg each weekend to work on our binders/scrapbooks. We have taken these simple skills into other projects for our Science studies such as creating books or booklets…making cards with pressed flowers, sketches, poetry and Scripture verses…and displaying our collections. The key is to just have fun and enjoy making your notebooks all yours!

Happy Notebooking!

Cindy

Quick Ideas for Making History Fun!
by Cindy Rushton

Want to make the new school year better than ever? Want studies
that are interesting for the whole family? I think I can help you!
How about some quick tips for making your history studies fun? I
think you will find these to make lessons fun and easy. Let’s dig
in…

* Get Out to See History as Much as Possible… Hunt up any
Living History Days scheduled in your area. Get out to all
historical sites and museums…even hands-on children’s museums.
Don’t miss any historical reenactments and plays within driving
distance! These all give wonderful opportunities to get your
children in touch with those that love History and know it best.

* Begin a History Notebook… This is the cure to dull, lifeless
texts. Let your children create their own notebooks of study!
Include anything from great quotes to poetry to pictures to
sketches to newspaper clippings to photographs to mementos from
history sites, reenactments and postcards from friends to
narrations from books read. These personalized curricula will
bring life into all areas of study.

* Tap Into Grandparents, Elderly, Family, and Friends… Our
family and friends have been a key source of finding out neat
stories that are not recorded in the history books. Sitting at
their feet, we have learned many details from history that would be
long lost without the gift of story telling. The key to making this
come alive is to listen and record their stories for your History
Notebooks. Keep this part of history alive for you and for
generations to come!

* Find Treasures at Antique Stores… One of our favorite
past-times is “junking” at antique stores, junk shops and flea
markets. Take your time to find wonderful treasures from the past,
which will breathe life into your History studies. You can find
journals, uniforms, books, dress up clothes, and even play gadgets
to make history come alive for your little ones!

* Let the Little Ones Make Up Their Own Costumes… I have always
enjoyed researching and creating authentic costumes from other time
periods. I used to have more time and energy to create costumes
for every time period we studied. Now, my children are using their
extra time and endless supply of energy to create their own
costumes. I love to see them as they pull together little things
from around the house to create their own costumes!

* Let Them Make Doll Clothes… This tangent began for us when my
daughter got her first American Girl doll. We combined my love of
creating authentic doll clothes with my deep passion for making
doll clothes. Each year for the past five years, I have spent time
each December creating matching outfits for Elisabeth and her
dolls. This is easy to do with today’s patterns. Just take basic
designs and create your own “historical” costumes for the dolls.
If you have a beginning seamstress interested in some quick
projects, this would be a wonderful way to learn the basics of
sewing while learning History!

* Make a Timeline…Timelines are priceless! We have had two
different kinds of timelines for our studies in History. We had a
huge one that took up an entire wall in our old home. It was
fascinating to watch the little ones as they would “review” and
“test” each other on history as they went by! When we built our
home, my husband would not allow that one back on the wall, so we
made our own Book of Centuries on our computer, which includes all
of our history facts. We simply developed a notebook with the dates
marked. We record key events, people we study and the key events
of their life, our family’s key events, illustrations which remind
the children of those historical figures and events, pictures that
the children have collected from books and trips that we have
taken, information from our Computer Encyclopedias and Internet
Sites, and even charts we have collected or made ourselves. These
are another “text” that we create about our studies. How priceless!

It’s Spring! Time for Nature Studies!
By Cindy Rushton

Spring is here!

Anybody else having Spring Fever? Ready to get outside to soak up the beauty and fresh air? Oh! This is the perfect time to make up any excuse to get outside. But, what if we call it "school" as we enjoy this gorgeous Spring?

Yep! It is Spring and and time for Spring themed Nature Studies. Yep! Time for that weekly Nature Walk! Time to pull out those Nature Notebooks and begin a fresh new study. NO pressure. Just with atmosphere of fun and delight! Want some ideas that are EASY? How about some of our favorites? Let’s dig in…

Trees…
• Hunt for new leaves (buds!). Mark the date for each tree.
• Look for blossoms on your tree. Describe and draw.
• Mark the date that your tree is in full foliage.
• Measure the height of your tree.
• Determine the age of the tree. Measure 5 feet from the ground around the tree trunk. Divide this measurement by 1 inch to get the approximate age in years.
• Collect and press leaves. Mount some in your nature notebook.
• Sketch your tree in watercolor or crayon for your nature notebook.
• Hunt for spring poetry about trees! Copy into your nature notebook.
• Look up Scripture verses about trees. Copy into your nature notebook.

Flowers…
• Each week take a walk to collect new wildflowers around your neighborhood. Press into a scrapbook/nature notebook.
• Sketch and label flower parts.
• Hunt for poetry about the flowers that are blooming each week.
• Find Scripture verses to copy into your nature notebook about all flowers.
• Plant some flowers outside in your yard.

Birds…
• Set out a bird feeder for birds around your home. Put one right outside of a big window so the children can watch the birds up close.
• Listen for early birds…they should be coming soon.
• Set out nesting materials for birds common to your area.
• Try building your own nest.
• Learn birdcalls and songs.
• Watch the birds as they gather materials for their nests…maybe you can see where they are building their nests and watch them as they feed their young.
• Hunt for nature poetry about the birds native to your yard. Copy into nature notebooks.
• Hunt for Scripture verses about the birds native to your yard. Copy into nature notebooks.

Insects…
• Start an ant farm.
• Begin your bug collection.

Animals…
• Hunt for animal tracks.
• Go on a night hunt for salamanders. You may want to make a home for one as a pet.
• Set up an aquarium for a frog home. Go to a local pond to collect some frog eggs—watch their life cycle! Be sure to document in your nature notebook!
• Make a chart of animal characteristics. Study how animals are classified.

Plants…
• Hunt for woodland flowers.
• Choose seeds or plants for spring planting. Start seeds now to have an early bloom.
• Grow plants from pits. (see Ideas Section)
• Gather samples from the woods of plants without flowers. (Good resource is Plants That Never Ever Bloom)
• Go on a hike through the woods. Look for tree seedlings.
• Hunt for spring mushrooms.

Astronomy…
• Keep a chart of the moon phases for a month—try March.
• Take an evening to spend stargazing.

Weather…
• Keep weather chart for the first two weeks of the season—begin March.
• Find out how rain is formed.
• Find any poems about rain for nature notebook.
• Find out about lightning. Add information to nature notebook.
• Hunt for rainbows.

Collections…
• Take a day for each of your collections to maintain. (Rocks… shells… feathers… so on.)

Seasonal Table Ideas…
• Budding branches
• Tulips
• Bird’s nest
• Fresh flowers
• Potted Wild Violets
• Dyed eggs
• Tissue Paper Butterflies
• Colors…pastels and jewel tones

Our God is GREAT! Do you know that?

I shared a couple days ago how God is bringing some renewing in my thoughts. (Don’t ever think that if something is "out there" presented in the public that it is absolutely complete, all there is, presented in perfection. That isn’t true of my teachings, NOR of anyone else’s – whether they let on to that or not. NO ONE has arrived. NO ONE has achieved the Wisdom of God! We are all growing and changing each and every day. OR we are already dead!)

OK, back on track. I am just SUPER EXCITED about the greater depth of understanding God is bringing to Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™! in ME, the founder of it! – still learning after all these years. I am hoping to be able to convey some of this at the Ultimate Homeschool Expo next week. And will for sure be adding it into Freedom & Simplicity™ of Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™ ~ The Seminar LIVE! 2008, in June.

One area is the teaching on the "Universal Principles" I give, that I knew there were more connections to be made, but wasn’t exactly sure HOW those connections were to be made. God has opened my eyes to see this even clearer – hopefully bringing even more Freedom & Simplicity™! I’m really hoping that He’ll open it up for me to share it with you next week. Please pray for me as I finalize what parts of the L.E.D. message I’ll share at the UHSE, that it would be just the things those that attend need to hear.

He’s also been clearing a few other paths.

Just had to let you know, there’s more exciting new things to come in Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™!

Yours for Freedom & Simplicity™
in Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™ ~

Just sharing a bit from my heart today. I have been slowly working on the new Freedom & Simplicity™ resources that are nearing completion, but having some struggles in staying focused on one, or even deciding which one I should be staying focused on completing first. That’s a problem for a writer.

In fact, I’ve had some stirring in my soul. Seeking rest. Sensing greater need to pull in closer to God and His Word. Seeking Him even more intensely than usual. I recognize the stirrings well enough to know that it is time to put aside the "things" I’m trying to figure out, and just seek God and His Kingdom. And He will add all things. That’s what I’ve had to do. I’ve wanted to complete resources, but won’t do it at the expense of seeking Him.

My Father is always faithful, and Sunday a.m. I awoke with fresh insight. I cried as I read His Word. I cried in the shower. I cried throughout church worship. I am in awe of our Creator, our Savior, our Master, my Abba. He is GOD! He is worthy, just because He is!

But my Heavenly Father goes beyond. He not only let me see HIM clearer. He not only drew me closer to Him. But He also gave me a greater insight and direction for Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™ – which, at least in my case, nearly always goes back to the foundations He gave me long ago, and making sure I am staying on that path. Not trying to broaden it beyond its bounds to the left or to the right, which could, if taken too far, cause me to stray in a whole other direction. He keeps me headed where He has directed – in Freedom & Simplicity™.

I covet your prayers, as I prepare for my seminar session for Ultimate Homeschool Expo next week, and Freedom & Simplicity™ of Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™ ~ The Seminar LIVE! 2008 in June, and in the completing of new L.E.D. Freedom & Simplicity™ resources. I continue on, renewed in faith that I am following the path that God would have for Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™. May God grant me grace to share that in clarity with those He desires to hear it.
