Wet Sock Treatment

It’s not a very smart thing to allow your immune system to get run down – with junk food, little sleep, and over busyness – especially when there’s a “bug” in the air, and fresh air is at a premium due to the temps outside. But that’s usually what happens over the Holidays.

‘Tis the season for a lot of coughs, colds and flu, and much of it has been going around here. But I don’t have time to be sick, šŸ™‚ so I just kept plugging along in preparations for our Celebration of the Incarnation of our Lord and Savior. I knew once I slowed down I needed to be careful or I’d catch it too. And sure enough, once I took a couple days to relax after the holiday, I started to feel a cold coming on. But I wasn’t going to let it get me.

So what’d I do? Started fighting it in all out force before it could actually get ahold of me.

Some of the natural treatment preventative remedies we use are Certified Pure Therapeutic Gradeā„¢ Essential Oils from doTerra, Grandma’s Onion Syrup, GOCO, Herb Teas (not as effective as the EOs, but the sooth and feel good going down, and do have the same benefits, just not as efficient), and the Wet Sock Treatment. I’ve written about the others before, but I’ve never put the WST here before. So here it is.

I learned of theĀ Wet Sock Treatment from a friend when our older children were little. She learned of it from her Naturopath/Homeopath Doctor. As it’s name says, it involves wet socks.

TheĀ Wet Sock Treatment is an immune stimulating treatment recommended by Naturopaths and other holistic doctors.Ā The hydrotherapy (going from hot feet to cold socks) increases circulation and stimulates the immune system, so it’s good for cold, flu, fever, sinus, ear ache, sore throat, upper respiratory, infections, etc. I’ve even heard migraines. (But I’m not a doctor, prescribing anything to you, just telling you what we do that we’ve learned from doctors.)

WET SOCK TREATMENT

woolsockYou need a pair of very light weight Cotton Socks and a pair of heavy wool socks – cotton socks at least 90% cotton, wool socks at least 90% wool. Put cotton socks in a bowl/sink of very cold water. Soak your feet in as hot of water as you can stand for 10 minutes or more (or take a hot soaking bath). I add my EOs to my foot soak water (like OnGuard).Ā Ā Immediately (after getting out) take the cold wet cotton socks out of the cold water andĀ put them on.Ā Then pull the dry wool ones over them. Go straight to bed and cover up. Leave the socks on all night. Keep covered. Rest well.

It’s best to do the WST at the beginning of coming down with something. As with everything, catch it fast to ward it off. But even later in the course it will be helpful. You may need to do it 3 days in a row, if the crud is already getting to you.

Try it. For your health!Ā It may save you from the crud this winter.

Changes?

Time for a brief explanation. You’ll be seeing some changes on this site, in the essential oils posts. [Edit: Actually, we have a whole new website devoted to Essential Oils now. Check it out.) We will continue promoting only the best quality, 100% natural and pure, therapeutic grade essential oils, as we always have.

This fall I have been doing a LOT of research into that. I have come to some conclusions that I feel I can release now. Ā After much research and prayer, we are currently using doTerra essential oils in our home and believe them to be of superior quality (and have used both side by side, comparing). I was very skeptical of anything better being out there, and this has been a long process and not taken lightly.

As always our only goal is to promote the healing properties God has placed in the plants He created for the benefit of man. We have no animosity against anyone, and no argument against any essential oils themselves that are truly 100% natural and pure and of true therapeutic quality. That is our only aim. We have been served well over the past decade and a half. And we look forward to being served at least as well in the future.

If you have any other questions, or if you’re local and would like to experience these essential oils for yourself,Ā pleaseĀ contact me.

If you’d like to check out doTerra or order,Ā click here.Ā — To learn more about EOs, check out our new website.

As always, just wanting to do the best for our family,
and to glorify God in all I do.

Scent-sational Saturday: Peppermint

Scent-sational Saturday

[edit: We’ve moved our Essential Oils posts to our new website devoted to essential oils,Ā God’s Scent-sational Apothecary’s Chest]

Today wereĀ looking at yet another essential oilĀ that I believeĀ should be in EVERY home .

If you’re just starting with 100% natural and pure, Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, I highly recommend a Kit that includes Peppermint.

Peppermint is another scent that is familiar to many. And probably the herbal property that has been used by more than any other, since many people that don’t even think of using herbs drink peppermint tea or have used some sort of menthol OTC remedy, such as Vick’s Vaporub, Hall’s Mentho-lyptus Cough Drops, or Mentholatum ointment. (Whether those OTCs still contain any natural peppermint oil in them or not, I don’t know. And I don’t recommend them.)

In our home Peppermint is used in many ways. It is great for digestion, so used for tummy aches, nausea, indigestion, and other digestive ailments. We both rub it on ailing tummies, and drink it in water – even when we aren’t sick – as a mint tea.

It’s also cooling, so we rub it on our foreheads or the back of our necks for fevers. As a pain reliever, it’s also great in those places for headaches (and in other places for other pains).

It is stimulating to the mind, so diffusing it can help with alertness, concentration and memory. Good one to diffuse while studying. šŸ™‚

As an anti-bacterial it is great for bad breath, just put a drop on your tongue or make a natural breath spray with it.

It’s also a decongestant and expectorant, so will clear the sinuses and help you breath easy and loosen congestion (as it’s use in those OTCs indicates.) For this, we use an Essential Oil respiratory blend that includes Peppermint.

There are so many more uses for Peppermint. To name just a few “asthma, bronchitis, candida, diarrhea, digestive aid, reduces fever, halitosis, heartburn, hemorrhoids, hot flashes, indigestion, menstrual irregularity, headaches, motion sickness nausea, tumor growth, respiratory infections, shock, itchy skin, throat infections, and varicose veins.”*

Scent-sational Saturday: Lemon

Scent-sational Saturday

[edit: We’ve moved our Essential Oils posts to our new website devoted to essential oils,Ā God’s Scent-sational Apothecary’s Chest]Ā

Moving on inĀ this seriesĀ on how we use therapeutic grade essential oils in our home, today we’ll continue looking at theĀ EOsĀ that I believeĀ should be in EVERY home – and are included in my favorite Kits!Ā Ā If you’re just starting with Certified Pure Therapeutic Gradeā„¢ Essential Oils, I highly recommend a Kit that includes Lemon.

This inexpensive EO is a great detoxifier. I begin the day with Lemon water to help flush out toxins my body has been working through the night to eliminate. If I don’t have fresh lemons to squeeze, or if I’m in a hurry, I grab my Lemon EO and add a couple drops to my water.

Lemon also has great antiseptic-like properties (germ killers), so we also add Lemon EO to our homemade cough syrup, as well as a couple drops of Lemon EO to a spoonful of raw honey for sore throats (either taken by the spoonful or stirred into a cup of hot water for a soothing drink.) “According to Jean Valnet, M.D., the vaporized essence of lemon can kill meningococcus bacteria in 15 min, typhoid bacilli in one hour, Staphylococcus aureus in two hours, and Pneumococcus bacteria within three hours. Even a 0.2% solution of lemon oil can kill diphtheria bacteria in 20 minutes and inactivate tuberculosis bacteria.”

“Lemon oil may be beneficial for anxiety, blood pressure, digestive problems, respiratory infections, and sore throats. It helps promote leukocyte formation, improves memory, strengthens nails, cleans the skin and promotes a sense of well-being … [and helps] brighten a pale, dull complexion by removing the dead skin cells. It serves as an effective insect repellent …”

Lemon EO is also great for cleaning and smells great. It’s cleansing and antiseptic properties make it perfect in a skin cleanser, especially for those that have outbreak problems. I use a face scrub and toner with Lemon EO in them.

In the home it’s also great for cleaning countertops, as well as kitchen and bathroom fixtures. Add a drop or two to your wet dishcloth, or a few drops into a spray bottle (or sink) with water, vinegar, or natural cleaner. It’s also greatĀ as an air freshener that doesn’t cover odors, but eliminates them and leaves a fresh scent. Either put a few drops in a spray bottle with alcohol or water, or diffuse it through a diffuser made especially for essential oils. Lemon and other citrus EOs are also effective “gunk” removers, such as gum, oil, and greases spots.

Scent-sational Saturday: Lavender

Scent-sational Saturday

[edit: We’ve moved our Essential Oils posts to our new website devoted to essential oils, God’s Scent-sational Apothecary’s Chest]

Today we’ll begin looking at theĀ EOs inĀ my favorite KitsĀ that I believeĀ should be in EVERY home!

Today we’re looking atĀ Lavender Essential Oil.

Lavender is probably the most common and most used of all essential oils – and for good reason. “Lavender is a universal oil with many different applications. It may help arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, convulsions, depression, earaches, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, hives, insect bites, laryngitis, nervous tension, respiratory infections, rheumatism, and throat infections.” Wow! Besides that, most people think it smells great!

In our home, Lavender is our number one “skin oil”. It isĀ used any time someone has a scrape, cut, rash or burn because it “is beneficial for cleansing cuts and wounds”. Ā It is also the EO we grab for flare ups of eczema in a couple of family members, and is great for dandruff, allergies, acne, dermatitis, psoriasis and rashes and other skin irritations.

For burns, whether sunburns or other, it is the best for cooling, cell renewal and minimizing scarring. Lavender was the EO in the forefront of bringing essential oils back to usage in modern times. “The French scientist Rene Gattefosse was the first to discover lavender’s ability to promote tissue regeneration and speed wound healing when he severely burned his arm in a laboratory accident.”

Lavender EO is also very relaxing and calming, so diffusing it or using as a “Pillow Spray” can help us sleep better. Some use it to help reduce snoring.

Holiday Scents

Tis the Season

ThanksGiving (as a Holiday) is over and everyone is shifting to the Christmas mood. Our son has been asking since September to sing Christmas songs and I’ve told him all along, “Not till after Thanksgiving.” Well, it’s here.

The fragrance of the holidays is one of the top things that I think make it seem like the holidays. But artificial fragrances do me in. I can’t handle too many candle brands, and no “air freshener” brands. I just don’t tolerate chemical smells well (not even perfume and cologne, and certainly not in cleaners and such.)

But I do love natural scents, such as whole food goodness baking in the kitchen, spices simmering in a pot of soup or such, and 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils diffusing throughout the home.

Holiday Joy and Christmas Spirit are favorites. In fact, another son has been diffusing it for over a month, any chance he gets. It’s obviously one of his favorite essential oil blends.

Others that will get you in the holiday mood areĀ White Fir, Wild Orange, Cinnamon, and Clove.

Of course, we can’t forget Frankincense and Myrrh either.

Order your holiday essential oils now to get in the mood with natural holiday scents from 100% pure and natural, therapeutic grade essential oils.Ā And don’t forget a Diffuser to get the scent-sational fragrances in the air.Ā

Bone Healing at Our House

Broken bone healing support at our House – before and after proper medical attention, setting and casting. (Not med advice, claims, or any such. Just what we do. And not everything at the same time.)

General important foods:Ā green leafy veggies for calcium and trace minerals, bananas for potassium, easy to digest proteins-good whole foods. Sounds like a Green Smoothie to me. šŸ™‚

Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils: Lemongrass, PanAway/ Deep Blue, (need to re-order or find quickly) Helichrysum, Peppermint (especially at the beginning, and for tummy after anesth).

Supplements: Calcium, Magnesium, Vita D, Vita C, chlorophyll.

Herbs: Echinacea Goldenseal (for detoxing fro anesthesia), Nettles and Oatstraw (for bone healing), Astragulus (healing support – if I can find more, we’re out.)

Homeopathic: Arnica (pain and healing support), Phosphorus (for anesth detox) (Didn’t have Nux Vomica in my purse for immediately after awakening. He didn’t get sick, but it helps for the detoxing too.)

Thankful for God’s original natural healing helps, and His design of our bodies to self-heal with proper support.
