Wisdom's 7 Pillars: Stewardship

Freedom & Simplicity™ of Lifestyle Education through Discipleship™

flower border

Our Stewardship Pillar covers all the "economies" - personal stewardship and finances, business and world economics. But these external economies are not where Stewardship begins. It starts internally with care of our conscience and our external care of our bodies, our most personal property.

Stewardship is not only a discipline Pillar, but also one of the Foundational Principles. All that we have, both personally and in the earth, is not ultimately ours. It belongs to our Heavenly Father, who has placed it under our stewardship for our enjoyment. We need to exercise proper care and use over all.

Thank you for your order through our links. It helps support the many aspects of "free" ministry from Me and My House.

Biblical Foundations & Rudiments of Stewardship

Our favorite resource for laying the foundation of Stewardship is A Guide to American Christian Education for the Home and School by James Rose, in the chapter "The Principle Approach to American Christian Economics " by Charles Hull Wolfe. You'll see this work recommended over and over in our Rudiments sections. It is a great resource, very highly recommended, to gain an understanding of the Biblical Foundations and Rudiments of many subjects. This is the resource for gaining the Big Picture in God's plan for each area of learning.

Encyclopedia of Bible Truths by Ruth Haycock are like a Topical Bible for school subjects, giving Biblical concepts (principles) and related verses for various content areas within each subject. The four volumes are: Lanugage Arts/English, Social Studies, Science/Mathematics, and Fine Arts/Health, and there is a slight discount for buying the 4 Volume Set. This is the resource for relating every area of learning to the Bible.

We also recommend Paul Jehle's tape series 7 Pillars of Wisdom, which covers 7 Foundational Principles, including Stewardship.

General Economics

Economics in Comics - Easily understand the basics of Economics, presented with comic illustrations. "Every economic problem from the time of Adam Mouse to the high tech age of inflation, automation, fat cats and bureau-rats is simply explained in the all American medium of cartoons." Even my 9 year old enjoyed this. (And she wasn't the first one. We've been using this with all our children as a great introduction.) (See Biblical Economics below to order)

Whatever Happened to Penny Candy - Another great book for introducing young ones to Economics. This one is presented through "letters" written from an uncle. He explains Economics in terms and through situations children can understand. Another we've used with all our children. (see below)

Biblical Economics - by R.C. Sproul Jr. - A clear, straight forward, biblical perspective of economics and God's provision. Simple to understand book for youth and adults. We are currently using this with our youth. (see below to order)

Economics in One Lesson - Henry Hazlitt - Very readable, short chapters, story format. The "lesson" is presented in the first chapter. The remaining chapters are story form applications. Not to be missed by youth and adults. (or free download link on this page from the Foundation for Economic Education

The Law - Frederic Bastiat - The classic, short . Bastiat was a French economist in the mid-1800's, when France was rapidly turning socialistic. He explained its falacies and warned it would degrade into communism. Important read, as it mirrors our nation's current state. - link to free online access.

Wealth of Nations - Adam Smith - classic of modern economics. First published in 1776, this was the first comprehensive treatment of political economy. His advocacy for the free-market economy revolutionized economic thought of the time. (Below I've listed another cheaper paperback that is still unabridged, also.) - link to free audiobook by LibriVox.

Basic Economics - Clarence Carson - From the author of Basic History of the United States. This easy to understand, high school level text covers not only free market economics, but also examines the various political-economic systems through history.

An Introduction to Christian Economics - Gary North - free ebook link on this page (many other economic books to download there also) (hardcopy out of print - runs approx. $50 paperback/ $100 hardback used)

Honest Money - Gary North - biblical standards of economics - or free ebook link on this page

All About Money - Crown Financial - simple book about understanding money for children.

Biblical EconomicsBiblical Economics in Comics is also listed on this page. We use it for our younger children. It's a great introduction for mom and dad too! :-)

Personal (Family) Finance

The book from a biblical perspective that we found helpful for personal/family finances many years ago, Your Money Matters by Malcolm MacGregor, is long out of print. (used copies) Today Crown Ministries or Dave Ramsey materials are another choice. Although we never found Burkett's actual budget materials workable for our large family, we greatly respected and agreed with his financial advice from a biblical perspective. We've used several of their materials with our children. A few we have are linked below.

Another resource we have, that is also out of print, and I hope to find a way to bring it back or a similar substitute for, is Living Faithfully Financially. It is a budgeting course for teens, based on real life scenarios they work their way financially through. It was great preparation for our older girls keeping a budget and making financial choices. [UPDATE: Our new course, Freedom & Simplicity™ in Family Finances is now in the editing process, and will be available soon!]

Business

Kids Co - currently out of print - a great all around biblical business and economics curriculum for children. It teaches them biblical principles of Economics, the history of Economics, and the Skills for starting their own business. (We are working with the author for a possible republication.)

Home and Family Business Workshop - Gregg Harris - These have been out of print and I just found out Noble has redone these audios as mp3's. You can purchase the Family Business Workshop at their website. This is an awesome workshop! I'm happy to see these available again. We purchased the cassettes and syllabus when they first came out in the early 90's. We thought it was great then and still do today. A family business is one of the greatest legacies we can leave our children. And this seminar will give you great information for building one on Christian foundations.

Minding Your Own Business - Raymond Moore - another great family business resource. Great info for making a home business truly a family business, as part of your children's education
