381957: Why Johnny Can"t Sing Hymns: How Pop Culture Rewrote the Hymnal

Why Johnny Can't Sing Hymns: How Pop Culture Rewrote the Hymnal
By T. David Gordon / P & R Publishing

I haven't read this one yet, just heard an interview with the author about it, and was intrigued.

Dr. Gordon looks at changes in worship from the fresh viewpoint of a Media Ecology perspective. Changes in music have changed the way we think, and the way we worship - or are even able to worship. The musical culture we are immersed in has altered our ability to understand other genres of music - so much so that we find them strangely unhelpful. This means that worship has become a conflict area, rather than a source of unity. Dr. Gordon not only shows the problems, he also provides solutions - it's important, because how we sing affects how we live.

Hymn Study

The study of Hymns conveys to us not only the individual's view of God and man, but also, if Biblically accurate, they teach us in a powerful way about our God and our relationship to Him. The Mr. Pipes series is our favorite 'real book' resource for hymn study. We've also used 101 Hymn stories and hope to get the Hymns for a Kid's Heart series.

Recently I found a website, Songs and Hymns.org, that we will use to supplement these books. And now a few more sites. They are listed in the blog entry linked below.

Read more about our Hymn Studies in this blog entry.

216901: Abide With Me: The Stories and Sites of the Great British Hymns

Abide With Me: The Stories and Sites of the Great British Hymns
By Dr. John Parker & Paul Seawright / New Leaf Press

We don't own this one YET, but based on reading a preview, AND my trust of both the author and the publisher, I know we'll love it, and so will you. Beautiful coffee table edition.

Combining internationally acclaimed Paul Seawright's breathtaking photographs and John Parker's descriptive text, Abide with Me is a gorgeous collection of images from the sites, sounds, and history that gave birth to some of Christianity's most poignant and revered hymns. You are familiar with these songs, but do you know:

  • The hymn specially written for a sister's wedding in 30 minutes
  • The privileged poet and hymnist who would die ministering in India
  • The first British hymn ever written and its original language
  • The song of comfort written by the daughter of a newspaper editor; a song associated with the funerals of three American presidents
In the past 300 years, no other collection of poetry and music has been voiced or loved as consistently as have British hymns. Every week during those centuries, worshippers in churches throughout Britian, Europe, and America have read and sung such verses as "Rock of Ages" and "Abide with Me." Whether celebrations of joy or in times of sadness, these hymns have become staples of our culture, and this book will become a classic family favorite as well.

Music Study

The foundation for our music study is the Word of God, and the CD described above, Profound Effects of Music, provides great support to that. But the key, foundational book for our actual studies is The Gift of Music. And foundational to that is probably Francis Schaeffer's How Should We Then Live? (See our Christian Worldview page.) There are several other resources we are using, but I have not put together a complete course or decided definitively which ones we will post here as our top picks. David Quine has a music appreciation curriculum (outside link) based on these books. We don't have it, so aren't necessarily recommending it, but I respect his work.

Art Study

Our daughter is going through Barry Stebbing's God and the History of Art, which combines art history and art instruction. We are also using some of Stebbing's other art instruction books with our other children. This too is an area where I have not put together a complete course. Mostly we study art history and artists through the Art section in Homeschooling Today magazine, making our choices according to our current HisStory study. This series of articles was begun by David Quine, who has also published an art appreciation curriculum (outside link) based upon the work of Francis Schaeffer. The series in Homeschooling Today is now done by Stebbing. The F.A.C.E. has an Art Curriculum Guide that I will be using when I put together our complete course.
