I came across this today. I really like the description. If you’ve read it, let me know what you think. If not, and you think it sounds good too, you can get it from our partner, MonergismBooks.

Developing a Christian Mind (New Revised Version) Oliver Barclay
What happens when we try to love God with all our mind, as well as with all our heart and soul and strength? Does it mean that we have to become intellectuals? Certainly not! It will have an intellectual aspect for intellectual people, of course, but in the New Testament it is something very practical and down to earth. Because our minds are involved in the simplest decisions, the challenge to develop a ‘Christian mind’ is something we cannot escape, being either obedient or disobedient in the matter. Either we try to please God by loving him with all our mind, or we avoid this responsibility, hoping that somehow a mindless love is good enough.

is really just old fashioned liberalism.

It’s said, rightly, that those that don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. Man falls into the same sins, and acts on the same fallacies over and over. We are currently going through a replay of some of the early 1900’s. Liberal theology, a questioning of the veracity of The Bible, downplaying the Gospel, atonement and resurrection, up-playing a social gospel - and it leading to national consequences, socialism and fascism, is all in vogue again. (See link at the end to see how so.)

But by God’s grace He is once more raising up those that will stand for His Truth. We are thankful that there remains a remnant faithful to the Gospel in our apostate nation. See some of those, that we’ve found, in our sidebar. How apropos that we are currently studying both economics and the early 1900’s, and reading J Gresham Machen, (Christianity and Liberalism), one who stood in the early 1900’s against the tide of liberalism sweeping in then. (A man plans his ways, but the Lord directs his path. - Pro. 16:9)

Sadly this liberalism has taken over the National Pastors’ Convention. Graciously, some stand firm on the only hope for mankind - the Truth of the Gospel and God’s Word, such as Together for the Gospel.

More about the Pastors’ Convention:

I write, so to speak, from the belly of this beast, attending the National Pastors’ Conference, sponsored by Zondervan and Intervarsity Press, which is taking place in San Diego, February 9-14, 2009. It is amazing to see how these once faithful publishers of evangelical orthodoxy are now consistently and deliberately launching a massive but subtle attack against the “Fundamentals” for which Evangelicalism stood courageously against liberalism in the past.

While I am struck by the sincerity of the brilliant public speakers (named below), who still have evangelical piety and passion, their openly-stated theology is turning large swathes of the evangelical church into various new forms of old-fashioned though very cool liberalism. …

I discuss with others much about the socialism of our civil government that ought not be so, and where charity, care for the poor should come from - the church, both individual bodies and congregational bodies, to care for the poor both within and outside of the Body. “Spreading the wealth” through forced collectivism never works. Only voluntary giving will truly solve our problems. That requires Christian character, or just plain ol’ fashioned morals and ethics, the foundation that is necessary to get our nation back where it needs to be. (Did we really the the Me generation would lead to anything else than it has in our nation?)

Jim Eliff shares how his church is doing what should be done for the members of their own body.

As the economy worsens, most churches need to think through the pain of its members. Do you have a responsibility for those in the church? What will you do? The answers to this problem are varied.

I haven’t listened to the recording yet, but I’ve read the book and it’s good. Here’s what they say about it:

It’s not uncommon for an accomplished musician to be able to sit down in front of a new piece of music and play it through without a hitch. To make it seem easy, as if it required no effort. Yet the “freedom” to play with such skill comes only after years of disciplined practice. In the same way, the freedom to grow in godliness - to naturally express Christ’s character through your own personality - is in large part dependent on a deliberate cultivation of the spiritual disciplines.

I received this update today on the Gospel of John Project I wrote about a couple weeks ago. I am so happy the goal has been reached for the Gospel of John for Philadelphia outreach. The goal was 10,000+ copies, and well over 11,000 have been sponsored so far. They are currently at the printer. Please pray that these Scriptures will reach the hands and the hearts of those God is preparing to receive them. That they would read God’s Word, He would bring understanding, and they would respond with faith and repentance. “His Word will not return void.”

UPDATE: 12,000 booklets for this campaign are currently being PRINTED! At this stage, all graphics have been handed over to the Trinitarian Bible Society for review and printing. After that, it will be off to the mailers!

As always, to keep up-to-date with our latest progress, please visit:

Your financial support has made it possible for us to reach this stage. We are very appreciative of your help.

But please remember to continue to pray for genuine fruit from this effort. Our responsibility is certainly to sow the seed but we must realize that ’salvation is of the Lord.’ We humbly ask that you pray that these booklets will reach the right homes to do the most good in helping broken lives and directing families to visit good, local churches.
