Catch The Vision: The Roots Of The Reformed Recovery-The Men And Movements In The Mid 20th Century By John J. Murray / Evangelical Press It is the belief of the author that a significant change came about in the history of the church in the United Kingdom in the middle decades of the 20th century. It was by and large a recovery of something that had been a reality in the church in past generations. Step by step men were led to see what was missing in the type of Christianity that prevailed for the first half of the century and began to direct their minds back to the glories of past eras.It is instructive to trace the various strands which were woven together in the providence of God to bring about the recovery. is really just old fashioned liberalism.

It’s said, rightly, that those that don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. Man falls into the same sins, and acts on the same fallacies over and over. We are currently going through a replay of some of the early 1900′s. Liberal theology, a questioning of the veracity of The Bible, downplaying the Gospel, atonement and resurrection, up-playing a social gospel – and it leading to national consequences, socialism and fascism, is all in vogue again. (See link at the end to see how so.)

But by God’s grace He is once more raising up those that will stand for His Truth. We are thankful that there remains a remnant faithful to the Gospel in our apostate nation. See some of those, that we’ve found, in our sidebar. How apropos that we are currently studying both economics and the early 1900′s, and reading J Gresham Machen, (Christianity and Liberalism), one who stood in the early 1900′s against the tide of liberalism sweeping in then. (A man plans his ways, but the Lord directs his path. – Pro. 16:9)

Sadly this liberalism has taken over the National Pastors’ Convention. Graciously, some stand firm on the only hope for mankind – the Truth of the Gospel and God’s Word, such as Together for the Gospel.

I write, so to speak, from the belly of this beast, attending the National Pastors’ Conference, sponsored by Zondervan and Intervarsity Press, which is taking place in San Diego, February 9-14, 2009. It is amazing to see how these once faithful publishers of evangelical orthodoxy are now consistently and deliberately launching a massive but subtle attack against the “Fundamentals” for which Evangelicalism stood courageously against liberalism in the past.

While I am struck by the sincerity of the brilliant public speakers (named below), who still have evangelical piety and passion, their openly-stated theology is turning large swathes of the evangelical church into various new forms of old-fashioned though very cool liberalism. …

Yesterday I challenged you to to read dead guys. (See yesterday’s post or the Puritan Reading Challenge image in the sidebar.) Perhaps you were unconvinced. You see no reason why anyone would want to do this.

I gave you one good reason, spiritual maturity. Fluff reading (or non-reading) keeps Christians as babes on milk. They need to grow and enjoy a full well-rounded meal. That should really be enough. But for a nice list of a few good reasons, read Colin Adam’s 20 Reasons to Read (Good Christian Books). And I’ll try to get my own post written soon on why I think reading dead guys is important.

I’m taking a challenge that I’m praying for grace to complete. I have several books by Puritan authors, but there are many more I’d like to read. To help keep me consistent, I’ve joined the 2008 Puritan Reading Challenge.

I am going to try to keep up with the reading schedule of one book per month, from their list (below), as well as writing at least one blog post about each one. I’d also like to re-begin my Valley of Vision (alternate link – leather bound) daily reading along with this too, but that may be a bit too ambitious.

Steve Camp blogged on Jonathan Edwards’ "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" yesterday. Christians just don’t talk much about that anymore – an angry God that is. It certainly is not ALL God is. He is truly Love, perfect Love; and Good, perfect Goodness. But to be perfect love and goodness, He must also HATE sin. And He does. His Word tells us so. In fact, everything we can know for a fact about God is found in His Word. We have no other source for truly knowing Him as He is. We can’t make up our own little ideas of what we think God SHOULD be like. We take Him as He is, and as the Sovereign of the Universe.

If you don’t know who Jonathan Edwards is, you won’t find him on your local Christian radio station or your inspirational cable channel. He was a godly pastor whose preaching began the Great Awakening in the first half of the 18th century in America. Read more about him at Monergism.com.
